About the Data Manager

 

To date, Bluebonnet Data has recruited, trained, and placed over 1,250 volunteer fellows across more than 600 progressive campaigns and causes, providing political data and tech support for those who need it the most.

 

Bluebonnet Data is seeking a full-time Data Manager to support the work Bluebonnet and our client campaigns/organizations are doing. The Data Manager will have two sets of responsibilities: Managing the internal data & technical systems that Bluebonnet’s staff team uses; and helping build the trainings, resources, and support systems we create to maximize the impact of our volunteer data/tech teams’ projects for their campaigns & organizations. This position will report to the Technical Programs Manager but will have ample opportunity to take ownership of components of Bluebonnet’s programs or independent initiatives. This is a fully remote position, with intermittent travel requirements.

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

Manage Internal IT & Data Systems (35%)

  • Maintain our data management systems & automation processes primarily in Airtable, including integrations between other platforms such as Calendly, Zoom, Slack, etc; and ensuring good data standards to centralize & standardize the data we collect and use.

  • Build & maintain our internal data analytics/reporting systems.

  • Help respond to other internal ad hoc security, IT, & data needs.

 

Provide Political & Tech Advising to Fellows & Clients (Campaigns & Organizations) (30%)

  • Consult directly with clients to scope data & tech projects to be completed by teams of Bluebonnet Data Fellows.

  • Advise teams of Fellows on the political & technical details of their projects for clients.

  • Help build & conduct a thorough Fellow project review process.

 

Help Create Training & Project Support Resources for Bluebonnet Fellows (30%)

  • Help draft & conduct virtual trainings for Fellows covering topics across Political Organizing, Political Data & Data Methods, Political Tech & Tactics, and soft skills including project & team management.

  • Lead a volunteer Fellow team curating past fellow projects to be shared as guiding examples to future Fellows.

  • Assist with collecting & building external & internal resources relating to Political Data, Campaign Tech, and any topics relevant to the work of Bluebonnet Fellows.

 

Support to Programs Team (5%)

  • Work collaboratively to conduct Fellow interviews, info sessions and other miscellaneous tasks in support of our Programs Team, which is responsible for the recruitment, intake and long-term support of our Fellows and clients

 

Required Skills and Experiences:

Breadth of Programming & Data Analytics Skillset

  • Background working in Python, SQL, and/or R, with a working understanding of at least two of the three.

  • Demonstrated ability to quickly learn & adapt to new technologies, programming languages, and methods of data analysis.

  • Experience with applied data analytics, ideally from basics of data extraction & transformation to analysis, visualization, and communication of reports & insights.

  • Experience consulting directly with technical & non-technical stakeholders on technical & data analytics projects.

 

Familiarity with political campaigning

  • At least one cycle of experience (paid or volunteer) working in any political organizing setting (either a campaign or politically-oriented nonprofit/PAC/labor/etc.), ideally doing technical or data work. 

 

Strong communication & management skills

  • Experience as a project manager in a data/technical environment.

  • Able to juggle multiple projects and timelines.

  • Excellence in written and verbal communication.

  • Able to approach teamwork with a constructive mindset.

  • Able to manage multiple internal and external relationships.

 

Strategic leadership and agility

  • Able to think big-picture and able to break those large goals into smaller, actionable steps.

  • Observe and anticipate problem areas and approach them with a solution-oriented mindset.

  • Able to think critically and challenge norms.

Nice-to-Have Skills and Experiences:
  • Demonstrated project experience in data science.

  • Experience with Javascript & working with APIs.

  • Experience working with Airtable automation tools & extensions.

  • Experience supporting and working with remote teams.

  • Experience managing teams and people.

  • Familiarity with Git and version control, and experience working with GitHub.

  • Experience building or working with data analytics pipelines from ETL to BI tools.

  • Experience with Field Organizing, Digital/Comms, and/or other campaign activities beyond data/tech is a big plus.

Classification, Salary, and Benefits:

The salary for this position is set at $75,000. Benefits include healthcare and dental plans (50% employer-covered); generous vacation and sick time; and flexible work hours. There will be opportunities for advancement in salary, benefits, and title pending success within the organization.

 

Bluebonnet Data is a remote organization, but team members currently work between Boston (MA), Austin (TX), Denver (CO), and Washington (DC). Bluebonnet Data is not able to provide visa sponsorship at this time.
